This free variation on Hansel and Gretel, vintage Van Warmerdam, gradually changes into a road movie, thriller and western. More than fifteen years after the première, here is a crisp, completely re-edited version.
Grimm was Alex van Warmerdam’s fifth movie that premiered in 2003 at the International Film Festival San Sebastian: “It’s my only movie I always thought I could have gotten more out of.” When it turned out that all the footage of the film, which was still shot on celluloid, was intact, Van Warmerdam decided to readdress the story along with his editor Job ter Burg. This led to more than just a new cut. The image, sound and music were revamped as well.
